America's democracy is failing — and the world knows it

America has long expressed a goal of spreading democracy around the world. But according to Sweden’s International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, American democracy is showing signs of "visible deterioration."

Cynthia Miller-Idriss calls IDEA’s report "a wake-up call," but it's not too late to turn America's situation around. It will only come with both national and local investments that "create more informed citizens, restore trust across dividing lines, energize youth engagement and reduce political violence."
