For the second time in close to two months, former President Donald Trump has been targeted by a would-be assassin. The FBI said it is investigating the apparent attempted assassination of Trump at his Florida golf course Sunday afternoon. Trump was quickly transported to safety and later thanked Secret Service agents for their quick work on what he called “an interesting day.”

According to authorities, Trump was golfing with a friend around 2 p.m. in West Palm Beach when Secret Service agents noticed a rifle sticking out of some shrubbery on the edge of the course, several hundred yards away from the former president. Agents engaged with and fired at the suspect, who was later arrested on a Florida interstate by local authorities. Police have identified him as Ryan Wesley Routh.

“As I have said many times, there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country,” President Joe Biden said in a statement. “And I have directed my team to continue to ensure that Secret Service has every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to ensure the former president’s continued safety.”
